Publisher's summary[edit | edit source]

Bumblebee vs. Rom vs. Starscream vs. the Dire Wraiths! All alliances are off—this is a fight for survival! Torn between her Cybertronian heritage and her Solstar Knight upbringing, Stardrive takes control of her fate!

Plot summary[edit | edit source]

On Xetaxxis, the Dire Wraiths are overrunning the Decepticons, as the Ultra Magnus/Vekktral fusion begins to infect Starscream, a fate that even Magnus believes he deserves. The Space Knights attack him, but their Neutralizers have no effect. This leads to Stardrive picking up Sata and using her as a sword, allowing the Camien to cut off the fusion's arm which allows Starscream to escape. Regardless of allegiance, Blitzwing, Bumblebee, and Livia blast the Wraiths off of the Decepticons to prevent any more hybrids from being created. However, Starscream calls the Decepticons to retreat so he can recover the energon synthesizer and return it to Megatron, leaving the others to their fates.

As Stardrive follows the Decepticons, the Ultra Magnus/Vekktral hybrid grabs Bumblebee as the fusion of the Knights fire on its chest, hoping to destroy its spark. Stardrive reaches her targets just as they come across the synthesizer, but she is blasted by Starscream as he knows his words will not work on her anymore. Before he can kill the Camien, she is saved by Livia who shoots the Seeker with her Neutralizer. Meanwhile, within Magnus' mind, he and Vekktral are locked in combat, with the Wraith believing he can best the Autobot due to his study of Sky Blast's corpse. However, this gives Magnus confidence, since his body is not like others of his race, he temporarily frees himself from Vekktral's control and opens his chest compartment. Rom fires on his spark, despite Bumblebee's protests, killing him.

Elsewhere, Stardrive grabs Starscream and throws him to the ground, ripping off one of his wings as he tries to get back up. However, the Seeker has called for backup, which has just arrived. Latching onto Astrotrain, he fires on the synthesizer, setting off a chain reaction which will soon destroy half of the planet as the Decepticons head for orbit. As Bumblebee and Rom review the wreckage of the fusion, the Space Knight sees a smaller Cybertronian within Magnus. Bumblebee explains that Ultra Magnus is only a set of armor and the now deceased bearer was named Convoy.

However, Vekktral has escaped the charred Magnus hulk and now heads to infect Stardrive. Just as he reaches her, she transforms to flies away from the now detonating synthesizer. The Wraith attempts to grab onto her, but he is caught by the explosion. The Space Knights and Autobots are forced to retreat to orbit as they watch the explosion rip across Xetaxxis, destroying Dire Wraith and native Xetaxxian alike. Wanting this to happen all along, Livia is satisfied knowing that she has saved at least some of the population, something that Rom reluctantly agrees with. Stardrive, however, has had enough of the Solstar Order and, due to her Cybertronian physiology, rips off her armor and flies off, handing it to Rom as she leaves. The rest of the Knights and Cybertronians go their separate ways, hoping their kind never meets again.

Epilogue One: The Decepticons
On the Decepticon capital world, Starscream has arrived to tell Megatron that the Dire Wraiths were too unnatural to ally themselves with. His commander then tells him tells him that of the many ways he has disappointed him, the Seeker has found yet another way.

Epilogue Two: The Dire Wraiths
At a Wraith Hive, a Wraith Sorcerer tells his troops of Vekktral's failure, warning them that they must only rely on magic from now on.

Epilogue Three: The Autobots
The Magnus Armor's recall switch has activated, taking it and Bumblebee to the Autobot fleet. Optimus Prime informs the small 'bot that Convoy's predecessor, Minimus Ambus, has been called into active duty. Bumblebee, however, does not tell the Prime about the synthesizer, as he might prove the Solstar Order right about the Cybertronians' capability for evil.

Epilogue Four: The Solstar Order
Orphion and the Galactic Council decide that closing their borders to each other is the best for both of them. Rom is saddened by this decision, and even more so by a lecture Livia and Sata are giving to a group of cadets on how the moment they don their armor, they can never remove it.

Epilogue Five: Stardrive
Stardrive as arrived on a world untouched by civilization. She decides it is time for her to live her life based on her own choices, not others. Suddenly, the signs of a Wraith infection begin to appear in her eye.

Continuity notes[edit | edit source]

  • In addition to Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Prowl, and Ratchet are seen to know of the Magnus Armor. Both Ratchet and Prowl have been previously known to have knowledge of this information.[1] [2]
  • The decision to label Convoy as a short-lived substitute for Minimus Ambus appears to be a "patch" to a continuity error. It was presumed that Ambus had only taken the role of Ultra Magnus after Convoy's death, making his career as Magnus only about two-hundred years. However, previous Magnuses have been shown to survive for thousands of years, and Minimus was said to be the longest-serving Magnus, with this issue's revelation that Minimus had worn the armor before Convoy restoring the continuity.
  • Stardrive's leaving of the Solstar Order was spoiled by a previous issue which showed the Camien in her original color scheme.[3]
  • The structure that the Dire Wraiths are seen in is most likely a Wraith Hive, a structure that the Wraiths did not construct on Earth.[4]
  • The Dire Wraiths' hate for science has been shown in modern times.[5]
  • The smaller starships surrounding the Autobot command craft are various "Arks".

Franchise references[edit | edit source]

Transformers references[edit | edit source]

  • Ultra Magnus' thoughts are drawn in the same style as the same bubbles were drawn in the Marvel Comics Transformers comic book. The "floor" of his mental landscape is based on the packaging of the original Transformers toyline.
  • "Convoy" is Optimus Prime's Japanese name, which comes from the original Diaclone toy from which he was derived, "Battle Convoy". Ultra Magnus' original toy had the same robot mode as Optimus' original toy, but was in armor, leading to the Diaclone version being named "Powered Convoy".
  • On page 17, the Decepticon base is an upgraded version of a base used by the Decepticons in the original Transformers cartoon.
  • On page 18, in the viewscreen behind Optimus Prime, a Decepticon starship is portrayed that resembles the original depiction of the Nemesis.
