Biography[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Troubled Beginnings[edit | edit source]

In 7,000,000 BC on Cybertron, Nova Prime instructed his chief engineer, Tyrest, to tap into the Matrix of Leadership in order to create new sparks. Tyrest succeeded in his goal, creating more sparks than could be placed into pre-fabricated bodies. Thus, the surplus sparks were placed into cold storage, where they lay forgotten by 6,500,000 BC.

Around 5,000,000 BC, the sparks were discovered and mass production of bodies began. In 1st Cycle 012, a spark was set to thaw and sent to Constructed Cold Facility 113 in Tarn and placed in a body with a mining tank alternate mode. However, a group of time-displaced Autobots arrived and destroyed this particular spark. However, one of their number, Whirl, placed a Point One Percenter spark from Luna 1 into the body to prevent his enemies, the Functionists, from taking over Cybertron, creating the first hybrid Cybertronian - a forged spark within a cold constructed body. This Cybertronian would take the name Megatron of Tarn, taking the second syllable from the word "neutron". Upon awakening, he was given the serial number 071-980 and the function of a manual laborer.

A Miner and a Poet[edit | edit source]

The First Offense[edit | edit source]

Although he desired to be a medic, Megatron was forced into a position as a manual laborer, due to the functionist atmosphere. A member of one of the lowest classes, he was assigned to labor at a mine under Nova Point on Cybertron's moon of Luna 2. In his spare time, Megatron became an aspiring poet and befriended a fellow miner, Impactor His writings became well-known throughout the lower classes for their message of equality. Aslo, the Senate took notice of them as well, despising the poems as they caused dissent among the populace. Sickened by the segregated atmosphere, the young Tarnian began to write a treatise after some protesters were killed, After the Ark: Nominus Prime and the Illusion of Progress, in which he discussed his belief in non-violent direct action and the state of Cybertronian society.

In 4th Cycle 499, while he was on break in Rodion with Impactor at Maccadam's New Oil House, Megatron showed his friend his finished work, but Impactor still believed that violence was only course of action for change. Suddenly, two military cadets threw a psychologist on their table. Due to Impactor's general drunkenness, he attacked the cadets, starting a barroom brawl and causing Megatron to hide underneath a table. When Valve and a another member of the Rodion police force arrived, the two were arrested. They were taken to the Rodion police station where he was placed in a cell and began to questioned by Springarm before another officer, Whirl, arrived and announced he would be taking over the questioning. However, Whirl was on the Senate's payroll, and began to assault the Tarnian native, threatening him by claiming he would tell any inquirers that Megatron attacked him and Whirl killed him in self-defense. Before the Polyhexian killed him, Springarm came in and stopped him, saying that police captain Orion Pax had set Megatron free.

After being taken to Pax, the captain told him that he had talked to the bartender and confirmed that Megatron had stayed out of the action. Orion then told him that he agreed with most of what Megatron had written and to keep up his writings. As he left the station, Springarm gave him the datapad on which he had written the treatise. Disillusioned with his words of non-violence, he threw into a nearby screen and observed the shape of the shattered glass, remembering it for years to come.

Messatine[edit | edit source]

Knowing that killing Megatron would make him a martyr to his followers, the Senate decided to send him off-world to the planet of Messatine. With his new assignment as a nucleon miner, Megatron eventually met a fellow miner named Terminus, who encouraged him to continue his writings, who also proofread and smuggled the works to Cybertron. Soon, his writings spawned a group of followers known as the Decepticons, who took up the slogan "You are being deceived". referring to the Senate's corruption. Eventually, Terminus lost his legs in a mining accident and was deemed unfit to receive energon rations, leading to Megatron beginning to share rations with him to keep his friend alive. Megatron also began to write a polemic which he called Towards Peace.

In 51st Cycle 500, the Senate sent two agents, the pyschopathologist Froid and the mnemosurgeon Trepan, to Messatine confront Megatron. As the Tarnian was talking to Terminus, Trepan shot him with a volt gun. After strapping him to a table and clamping his mouth, Trepan began to employ a new form of mnemosurgery, Shadowplay, which changed a Cybertronian's personality. The mnemosurgeon began his work, but was soon stopped when Froid's colleague, Rung, arrived on the planet to tell him that new amendments made by the Senate required the surgery to stop. Suddenly, a strange power surge caused the mine to be evacuated. Megatron rushed back to Terminus' ward to find his friend but upon his arrival, Terminus had disappeared. The miner then presumably boarded one of the shuttles to escape the planet.

Croteus 12[edit | edit source]

Megatron was given a new position as a miner at Mining Outpost C-12 on Croteus 12. While there, his hatred for the system grew as he continued to toil in the mines. Around 4,200,000 BC, or 1st Cycle 502, Senator Decimus arrived at the facility to announce its closing and the relocation effort for the miners. One worker stood up to accuse the Senator of forcing out the workers in exchange for automation, which led one of Decimus' guards to kill the malcontent. This was the tipping point for Megatron, who threw his axe at Decimus' shoulder and punched the guard. The guard then grappled his opponent but was killed when Megatron accidentally smashed his head to pieces. A riot between the miners and the guards soon broke out as the Tarnian stared at the energon which covered his fingers. Suddenly, the guards, seeing an opening, opened fire, incapacitating all of the miners including Megatron.

Starting a Revolution[edit | edit source]

Taking Control[edit | edit source]

The rioters were placed on a shuttle, the Longshot, en route to Penal Facility H-3. When he awoke, Megatron was greeted by Frenzy and Rumble, two other miners who offered him a way to get out of their predicament. As the two distracted the guard, Megatron came from behind and offlined him. The group took over the shuttle and fired on Decimus' ship, crippling it in order to cover their escape. The miners then piloted their escape craft to Kaon City, in hopes that they could hide from the prying eyes of the Autobot Security Services.

Frenzy, Megatron, and Rumble eventually joined a gladiatorial circuit under Clench. The revolutionary also took on a new paint job, adding red designs to replace his miner regalia in addition to wearing a chain which bore a pendant in the form of the insignia of his employer's team. At his first gladiatorial match, he initially balked at taking another life, but goading from the crowd and Clench led him to bring down an ax on his opponent's chest. Megatron continued to fight in the arena against both Cybertronians, including Overlord, a previously undefeated champion until he met Megatron, and organics, but he soon realized that while he did all of the fighting, Clench kept all of the rewards, similar to the system he once worked under. During one match, the former miner ripped his captain's arm out of place, eventually killing Clench and making himself captain.

Consolidating His Forces[edit | edit source]

Soundwave[edit | edit source]

Megatron soon recruited the Constructicons, a group of former workers of the Senate, to build the arenas where the gladiator fights were held. As he attending one such construction along with Frenzy and Rumble, Megatron was approached by Soundwave, who offered him weaponry and technology, donated by Senator Ratbat. The group's meeting was spied upon by Bumper and Fastback, two members of the Security Services, who were soon spotted by Megatron and Soundwave, who deployed Buzzsaw, Laserbeak, and Ravage, three beast mode Cybertronians who fit into his chest compartment, to retrieve them and knock them offline. Taking the two agents to his base, Megatron killed Fastback almost immediately upon Bumper waking up. After threatening the 'bot, Soundwave decided to interrogate him instead, using his abilities as an Outlier to read his mind. After confirming Bumper posed no threat, Soundwave turned him over to Megatron, who promptly killed him.

Megatron met Ratbat and two established a deal, while the Decepticons gained weaponry, Ratbat gained profits from the chaos they caused. Impressed by Soundwave's treatment of his animalistic friends, the former miner invited the Outlier to a gladiatorial match, one where Grimlock and Scorponok were locked in combat. While there, Megatron asked Soundwave, among other things, if he felt that his "creatures" were necessary, something to which the servant of the Senate responded to by saying they were his friends, not beasts, an answer Megatron was satisfied by.

Starscream[edit | edit source]

Megatron soon assigned Soundwave the role of a recruitment officer while returned to fighting in the pits. He eventually assigned the Outlier to search for a warrior with an aerial alternate mode. Megatron also gave the Constructicons a new job in the form of upgrading his soldiers. After an altercation which resulted in the loss of his arm, he was being repaired by Hook when Soundwave returned with not one, but three warriors, Skywarp, Starscream, and Thundercracker. Although the three pledged their allegiance to him in the arena, Megatron told them they would fighting not be fighting gladiators, but something better. After his repairs were completed, he discovered Hook had installed a retractable energon mace into his arm. Megatron then ordered Hook to upgrade his new soldiers with weaponry.

Shockwave[edit | edit source]

Megatron also Starscream the job of recruitment officer. He also changed his color scheme, removing the red designs on his body from everywhere but his helmet, and changing the symbol on his chain to resemble the remains of the viewscreen he had shattered years ago. One day, Starscream presented a Senator, Shockwave, to Megatron. He offered the Senator the resources to carry out his experiments in exchange for Shockwave building a controllable combiner, an amalgam of many Cybertronians into one gestalt, for himself, an offer Shockwave accepted.

The First Battle[edit | edit source]

Preparations[edit | edit source]

Megatron's words inspired malcontents across Cybertron to revolt, including acts of sabotage in the industrial sector, fighting the Autobot Security Services, poisoning prominent businessmen and women, suicide bombings, disrupting commerce, and destroying transportation centers. He also directed Skywarp, Starscream, an Thundercracker on their first combat mission, the kidnapping of Senator Decimus.

Despite this, Megatron believed the Senate thought his forces were only an annoyance.
