Publisher’s summary[edit | edit source]

Success? The crew of the Lost Light, led by the mutinous Getaway, is now only weeks away from completing their quest. But such remarkable progress comes at a price. Just how far is their new captain prepared to go to find Cyberutopia? Unfortunately for the likes of Riptide and First Aid, it turns out the answer is “very far indeed.”

Plot summary[edit | edit source]

Not long before the Protectobots returned to the Lost Light, Getaway sits on a couch in Rung's office, recounting to a newly-released Froid the story of how the mutiny went down.

After the Lost Light left Cybertron, Atomizer and Getaway systematically spoke to everyone aboard on their status in the event of a mutiny, wiping their memory of the conversation if they refuse. While most of the crew sides with Getaway, about twenty-five remain undecided. After swaying Mainframe to their cause, the two conducted their last interview with Thunderclash. While Getaway hates the former captain of the Vis Vitalis due to his carrying of the Matrix of Leadership, Thunderclash agreed with the M.T.O. that Megatron needed to be kicked off the ship.

The mutineer's plot hit a setback once Tailgate's attempted "mnemosurgery" backfired and Getaway was arrested by Ultra Magnus, but after Mainframe told Rodimus about an unidentified signal from the Necroworld, Team Rodimus leaves to head for the signal's origin. Seeing his opening, Mainframe then led the rest of the crew to free Getaway from the brig. After he arrived on the bridge, Getaway saw a message from Rodimus and his team who had since been stranded, leading to him gloating over his use of a nudge gun and allying himself with the Galactic Council, something the mutineers were unaware of. Shutting off the call, he reassured the crew that the Council's only concern was Megatron, another lie as Getaway tried to contact General Neech to amend the terms of their agreement, a failed attempt that ended with a chair through a viewscreen.

Getaway then put Perceptor to work on analyzing the data he was given by Tyrest while he was held prisoner on Luna 1. The insane Chief Justice planned to use the Warren, a knot of quantum tunnels, to transport the Seething Moon to Cyberutopia, before settling on a spacebridge. Weeks later, Getaway calls his inner circle into Perceptor's laboratory to tell them that Perceptor has discovered the warren and compared it to Rodimus' map, revealing that they can arrive at the residence of the Knights in a few weeks. However, Thunderclash realized that Rodimus' map is incomplete, as there are unfinished sketchings which he finisheed, revealing the symbols of the five clans of the Knights of Cybertron. Suddenly, Blaster received a call from the Fraynians, who were requesting pickup from being caught in-between the Galactic Council and Black Block Consortia's cross-hairs. The crew was ready to help, but Getaway shut them gown, saying they are now focused on the quest, not rescuing people. Another call arrived, Rodimus' "last will and testament", which revealed that the Decepticon Justice Division is hunting he and his team and his wish for his energon to be used to purchase a bounty hunter to kill Getaway. The new captain of the Lost Light sent everyone out of the room except Atomizer and Thunderclash, who wanted to go help Rodimus, but before he could do so, Atomizer shot him in the throat with his bow and Getaway knocked him out with his nudge gun. This witnessed by Riptide, who was hiding outside of the door, and subsequently caught by Getaway. Within the hour, Getaway ordered Atomizer to release Froid and Sunder from the brig.

Now, Sunder offers a deal: in exchange for trapping Thunderclash in a memory loop and wiping the crew's memory of Rodimus' message, he wants twenty-five life cords to feast upon. Atomizer refuses, knowing this is not about getting rid of Megatron, but Getaway's quest to achieve his "destiny" of becoming Prime. However, Getaway initially refuses, but Froid convinces him to accept it, due to his obsession with Getaway's mental instabilities. The new captain of the Light agrees, deciding to use the cords of the "undecided".

After the Protectobots returned and were told the truth by Riptide, who remembers everything due to the nudge gun being out of ammunition, Getaway and the security team apprehend the Hydrobot. Meanwhile, the Protectobots are hunted down by the rest of the team who believes they are undercover Decepticons, thanks to Sunder's meddling. Atomizer and Getaway take Riptide to the oil resevoir, which the new captain has filled with semi-domesticated scraplets who strip Sunder's "sacrifices" away to their life cords. Needing another cord, Getaway shoots Riptide with the nudge gun, making him to forget how to transform and pushes him into the reservoir.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Continuity notes[edit | edit source]

  • Two crewmembers who are skeptical but not totally against the mutiny are Fervor, a security team member[1], and Turbine, who was last seen recovering from a blast delivered by Fortress Maximus.[2]
  • Just before Thunderclash arrives, Getaway says he is going to the oil reservoir with Tailgate, something that has happened before in a previous issue.[3]
  • Atomizer points out that Thunderclash carried the Matrix, something that was previously pointed out.[4] Getaway is seen to bristle at this due to the fact that he himself displayed the Signs of Affinity,[5] signs Thunderclash never showed.
  • Froid and Sunder were last seen being arrested and thrown in the brig.[6]
  • Getaway tells Froid about his plot to kill Megatron, his arrest by Ultra Magnus, and Cyclonus saving Tailgate.[7]
  • Pages 6-7 are reprinted directly from Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye 50, which showed Getaway's initial call to the Necroworld.[8]
  • Getaway recalls his time as a prisoner of Tyrest, and the Chief Justice's plan to build a spacebridge to Cyberutopia from Luna 1. The idea that Tyrest wanted to use the Warren to transport the moon to realm of the Knights explains the existence of quantum engines on Cybertron's lost moon.[9]
  • Hound recalls the class that Megatron held whose subject matter was the Knights of Cybertron.[8] The class decided that the Knights were divided five clans,[10] who were represented by various symbols. However, only the symbol that closely resembles a gear has appeared on the adventures of the Lost Light.
  • The scraplets in the oil reservoir are identified specifically as "red scraplets". These are not the same scraplets the caused trouble as the ship went through Mauler territory[11] but a different kind that has been implied to be on the ship based on Rewind's last message.[12]

Franchise references[edit | edit source]

Transformers references[edit | edit source]

  • In his last wishes, Rodimus requests that a bounty hunter with "horns," a "detachable hand", and "eyebrows that would make Rung jealous". This most likely Death's Head, who has previously appeared in this continuity[13], but originally appeared in the Marvel Comics series Transformers United Kingdom run. Rodimus also mentions that the "freelance peacekepping agent" is on Elpasos, which is where Death's Head was when in his first appearance in issue 113 of the Marvel series.
  • Rodimus also requests that his body is turned into a pathblaster that Death's Head should use to shoot Getaway in the head. The pathblaster also appeared in the aforementioned Marvel Transformers series, being a weapon that was used on Galvatron in issue 203.
  • The scraplet's appearance is based on the scraplets in the Transformers: Prime television series.

Real-world references[edit | edit source]

  • After Getaway turns off the monitor to cut off contact with Team Rodimus, he says "The will of the people has been realized—all without a single shot being fired!" This is a reference to a quote by British politician Nigel Farage who said this after the outcome of the 2016 "Brexit" vote which saw the United Kingdom leave the European Union.
  • Once Rodimus' transmission is shut off, Getaway calls it "fake news", a term that means a deliberate falsification of news media or social media. It was also used many times by United States President Donald Trump to refer to media attacks on him, similarly to Getaway's usage of it here.
  • Getaway calls Riptide "Boaty McBoatface", the name of an official British survey vessel whose name was chosen by popular opinion. He also calls him the "little engine that couldn't", a reference to the popular children's book The Little Engine That Could".
  • When describing his turning of Tailgate, Getaway calls him a "red rag", a euphemism that means deliberately provoking someone, as a red rag seemingly does to a bull.
  • Froid attempts to convince Getaway to sacrifice the crew by saying that the act is "securing a strong and stable future for our race." "Strong and stable" happened to be the slogan for the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May.

Errors[edit | edit source]

  • Getaway talking with Thunderclash is impossible. The former Matrix-bearer was comatose from when he was initially brought onto the Lost Light[14] until his reawakening by Tailgate's panic attack, after Getaway was in the brig[1]. Roberts has acknowledged this issue and will address it in a later issue, indicating that Thunderclash slipped in and out of the coma.[15]

Other trivia[edit | edit source]

  • This issue was scheduled for release in October 2017, but arrived a month late.
  • Two pages are re-used for More Than Meets the Eye 50, making this story's length 22 pages.
